Claire showed me these memorials which are to be found all over Berlin. The memorials are part of a massive art project called the Stolpersteine Project, by an artist named Gunter Demnig. The project commemorates the victims of the Nazis at their last voluntarily chosen place of residence. According to the Stolpersteine website, the project began in 1992 and in Berlin in 1996. "Stolpersteine" means "stumbling stone" and one does, figuratively at least, stumble upon these little brass plates, set in the cobble stones, all over Berlin. There are Jewish names all over the pavements of Berlin.
